EXPANSION FROM SOUTH MOUNTAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Community Hand Drumming Experience in downtown Allentown, Pa. is an extension of the program held at Allentown's South Mountain Middle School since November 2008.

For two years, students at the school have participated in weekly drum circles coordinated through a collaboration of the Urban Arts Center and the Community Partners for Student Success, or COMPASS, a program of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. The program takes hand drumming into local schools to expose students to the benefits of music and percussion, and to help create a thriving community gathering place after school hours.

The Community Hand Drumming Experience is the third locally-based initiative for YEA!, which also administers the Lehigh Valley Youth Drumline, now in its third season, and its premier program, the Xcape Dance Team, which has tripled its class schedule since its inception in 2007. The Community Hand Drumming Experience is also made possible through the generous donations and support of Remo, Incorporated of Valencia, Calif., a sponsor of YEA! and its programs, The Cadets and the US Scholastic Band Association.

For more information on the Community Hand Drumming Experience, contact Melissa Babalonis at Melissa@yea.org, or by telephone at (610) 821-0345, Ext. 115.
